Seeing All Kinds of Change

By Liz McMaster

Downtown Astoria is going through major changes again. Lindstrom’s Danish Maid Bakery closed in 2015 after the illness then subsequent death of John Lindstrom. The property has seen a change of hands and this week appears it is being refurbished in preparation for its next venture! The site has been in business as a bakery for approximately 90 years. Before it was Lindstrom’s the store was called Jones’ Bakery.

Rumor has it Gypsy’s whimsy is moving in the space where Toni’s boutique was and the building that housed the Bakery and Forsythea has been purchased. It’s further rumored that the buyer is from the Seattle area and there is talk of a sandwich shop. However, nothing is confirmed at this point.

Another, yet bigger, shock is that Astoria will lose its JC Penney store. April 2017 will be 101 years that JC Penney has been serving Astoria.  When JC Penney first opened its doors, it was located at the Spexarth building, then moved in 1924 to its current location. There is no word yet on when the Astoria store will close, but the original press release says that the stores will close “over the next few months.”

“Closing a store is never an easy decision, especially given the local impact on valued employees and our most loyal shoppers,” said Ellison
