Walmart, So What’s New?
By Liz McMaster
A new Wal-Mart is well on its way to opening a retail store in Clatsop County. The store will be located on SE Ensign Lane in Warrenton at the North Coast Retail Center just west of the new Astoria Ford location. If you have driven past lately, there is clearly a lot of activity at the site. What has happened to date is that a lot of environmental safeguards and preparations have been done in the form of soil stabilization and erosion control. Careful consideration is being made at each phase, in order to offset the impact of the construction of the buildings and paved areas planned.

Construction crews at the site are “Mostly moving dirt around at this point,” says Skip Urling, Planning Director of the City of Warrenton . “They are about to install a traffic signal and are also in the process of relocating a sewage pump station.” As far as his feelings about the work being done at the site, Skip says that as far as the environmental controls, “I think (they) have been very diligent about doing them the right way.”
Groundbreaking for the proposed 135,000 square foot retail store began in late 2016 and the store is projected to be open in 2018. The Wal-Mart being built is a Supercenter, meaning that the store will include grocery items along with general merchandise, have a lawn and garden department, pharmacy, and a fast-food restaurant.
