Au Naturel, The Nude in the 21st Century

By Sherry Holdiman

The Nude in the 21st Century is now on display at the CCC Royal Nebeker Art Gallery. The gallery is located at 1799 Lexington Ave Astoria, OR. This year marks the 11th year of this annual competition and exhibit. More than 400 submissions were received, and from among those submitted, the juror chose 52 works of art.

Founding Director Kristin Shauck is Instructor of Art at CCC and the Gallery Director. When asked what inspired the Au Naturel idea Ms. Shauck replied, “Initially, I wanted to expose my art students to figurative artwork by artists from across the country and throughout the world. I didn’t realize at the time how much I would be enriched by the amazing circle of figurative artists I would come to know over the years through this show.” Ms. Shauck has focused on the figure in her own creative work and has taught life drawing to students for over twenty years.

This year’s juror Daniel Duford is currently a Visiting Associate Professor of Art at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Mr. Duford’s work has been displayed in museums and galleries throughout the US. His creative accomplishments include painting, sculpture, and pottery, as well as other art forms, including comics. He is also a published writer.

The winners of this years exhibit were announced at the opening reception held February 9th, 2017 at the CCC Royal Nebeker Art Gallery.
