GREAT COLUMBIA RIVER CROSSING SET FOR OCTOBER 10TH

Register Now for the Great Columbia Crossing 10K

 – Limited to 2,000 participants on the Astoria-Megler Bridge, plus a virtual option. –

The Great Columbia Crossing 10K Run/Walk, sponsored by Columbia Memorial Hospital Cardiology Clinic, a OHSU/CMH Collaboration, will take place on Sunday, October 10, and participants are eager to register to claim their spot on the Astoria-Megler Bridge.

The Astoria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce hosts this annual event and announced in June that the race will return to the scenic course that takes participants from the starting area in Washington across the Astoria-Megler Bridge into Astoria. The Great Columbia Crossing is the only occasion where pedestrians are allowed to cross the longest continuous truss bridge in North America. The event will once-again include a full closure for enhanced safety for the participants and be completely closed to vehicles the morning of October 10, 2021.

Registration opened on July 14 through the event website, www.greatcolumbiacrossing.com, where interested persons can get more details about the event schedule, race course and more.

“Participants will find a few new options to select during registration this year,” said Bayly Lay, the Chamber’s event coordinator. “As an incentive to disperse crowds and reduce wait times during packet pickup, we ask for participants to select the day and time they will be coming to pick up their packet. We are also offering an option to mail the packet (which includes everything the participant needs for race day). If you’ve participated before, you may have encountered a long 30-45 minute wait to pick up your packet on Saturday, the day before the event. We don’t have a large building and those waiting had nowhere to shelter from the weather, which in October can be a problem. We are trying a few ways to make this experience better for both our participants and our volunteer crew. And, as an incentive to choose the mail option or to come early, we are doubling the number of clam bucks that those registrants get to spend with participating member businesses around the area.”

UP TO 2000 PARTICIPANTS EACH YEAR WALK OR RUN THE COLUMBIA CROSSING

Registration is $45 and includes electronic chip timing, clam bucks, shuttle service, parking, and more. It is optional to include a long-sleeve T-shirt for an additional $20, featuring a unique design from Ilwaco artist Don Nisbett this year. For those not able to participate in person, they can register for the virtual event for $35. This option includes shipping, the event T-shirt and a specialized bib for the virtual event.

At this time, registration is limited to 2,000 participants, but the race director may increase up to the normal maximum capacity of 3,500 as health advice allows. Nearly 1,000 people registered in the first 12 hours that it was open. The Chamber will work with event service providers and the local health departments as the event date gets nearer to determine whether to lift the capacity and in what increment.

The Great Columbia Crossing is hosted by the Astoria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce. The presenting sponsor is the Columbia Memorial Hospital Cardiology Clinic, a CMH/OHSU Collaboration. Columbia Memorial Hospital, in collaboration with Oregon Health & Science University, provides comprehensive care for a range of heart health and heart disease prevention needs here in our community.
