Community Business’ who Partner with Students
Honored at Luncheon

Tongue Point Job Corps, which boasts 16 prestigious trade programs this year, held a luncheon last Thursday, March 16. An honored occasion, featured guests at the celebration included members of the Work-Based Learning Partners.
Over 20 awards were given out to honor and thank the many work based partners in the community. A series of powerful testimonials were given by 4 Tongue Point students who shared how the partnerships with local business’ has benefited then by providing a place to work and train simultaneously

First to speak was Nadia. Feeling one of her biggest accomplishment has been the drive and follow thru to succeed for her two children whom she wants to give a good life. She is a student in the mostly male Seamanship Program and will be graduating soon.
Next was Nancy who has been in the program for over a year. Nancy’s past was rife with conflict and difficulty, getting expelled from High school and finding a difficult path after that. Now, as a result of her time at the Tongue Point Job Corp, she is considered a role model on campus, and is a frequent recipient of the much desired “Student of the Month”. Additionally, she testified that Job Corps has “turned her life around” with her newfound focus in Office Administration with Clatsop Community Action.
Dimitri was also a recipient who is showing a lot of promise with a career in Computer Service Tech. Currently, his acquired his computer certification has already got the attention of Seaside Providence hospital, his work based partner. They’ve offered Dimitri a job interview after graduation.
Finally, there was Katie. Following in the footsteps of her twin who completed the program 7 months prior to her enrollment, Katie is now on a fast track to a vocation in Pulmonology. Katie held nothing back in revealing how she ended up where she is today. After suffering from a job loss that cancelled all of her dreams, Katie, seeing the success her twin sister had, decided to turn to Tongue Point to make her next dream into a reality, a career.
The celebration ended on the note that Tongue Point offers much more than just preparation for the workforce. Indeed, they call it Job Corps, but it’s diligent graduates know it better as a Career Corps. For so many like Katie, Dimitri, Nancy and Nadia, it’s the map in the right direction that leaves nothing to chance, but everything to hard work and all its rewards.
