Alice Winifred Herrmann

Alice Herrmann passed away Jan. 8, 2017, with family beside her.
Born to E.C. and Susan W. (Eddy) Nelson on Feb. 14, 1919, in Waterville, Kansas, she was raised on her parents’ farm with two brothers. She was the valedictorian of the Class of 1936 at Waterville High School.
Alice married Leslie O. Herrmann on March 30, 1941. They lived in Willamina, Oregon, until Les was inducted into the military. Alice followed Les as he served as a flight instructor at U.S. Army Air Force bases during World War II. After the war they resided in Camas, Washington, until January 1950, when they moved to Seaside, Oregon, to raise their family and spend the remainder of their lives. Les preceded Alice in death on Aug. 3, 1977.
Alice was a longtime employee of Seaside Hospital, beginning as a nurse’s aide and retiring as ward clerk.
Alice enjoyed time with family and friends, baking cookies and games of pinochle or 500, all accompanied by a cup of coffee. After retiring, she loved traveling around the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Cuba, Great Britain, Europe, Japan and Hong Kong.
She was a member of Lighthouse Christian Church since 1950, the Ramona Rebekah Lodge, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and American Legion Auxiliary.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Carl and Waldo Nelson; and sisters-inlaw Jane Nelson, Dorothy Nelson and Yvonne Combs White.
She is survived by daughters Martha (David) Lambert, Diane Walters and Ellen (William) Shaw; sons Steven (Patty) Herrmann and John (Joan) Herrmann; grandchildren Scott (Tami) Lambert, Karin (Van) Velarde, Brenda (John) Riccardi, Tara (Tyler) Hebert, Andrew (Laura) Herrmann, Shauna (Benjamin) Potter, Ian (Miranda) Herrmann and Kelly Jo Herrmann; 15 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
The family thanks Providence Seaside Hospital, Clatsop Care Center, Lower Columbia Hospice, Suzanne Elise Assisted Living Facility and their caregivers for the wonderful care provided Alice and the support given her family.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, at Lighthouse Christian Church, 88786 Dellmoor Loop, Warrenton, Oregon. A private interment took place Jan. 18, 2017, at Willamette National Cemetery.
