Ernest Steinback

Astoria April 18, 1929 — Feb. 7, 2017

Ernest Steinback, 87, passed away at home in Astoria, on Feb. 7, 2017.

Ernie was born in Plevna, Montana, to Fred and Pauline Mertz Steinback, on April 18, 1929. He was married to the former Marline Haar in 1949.

Ernie was a long-haul truck driver, and enjoyed fishing and camping. After his retirement in the 1990s, he and his wife made their home in Mesa, Arizona, where he became active in community social events. He was known to be hard-working and fun-loving, with a great sense of humor.

Ernie was proud to have served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

After his wife’s passing, Ernie moved to Astoria to be near his son.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marline; and his brothers Jack, Otto and Edwin Steinback.

Survivors include his brother, Fritz Steinback of Billings, Montana, his son, Ralph (Janet) Steinback of Astoria, Oregon; a grandson, Charles (Blue) Steinback of Portland, Oregon; his granddaughter and her husband, Katie and Brayden Smith of Stayton, Oregon; and five great-grandchildren, Dak, King, Rook, Azzilin and Sunshine. Also surviving are his brother-inlaw, Howard Haar; and sister-in-law, Martha Huber; along with numerous nieces and nephews. A private graveside service was conducted on Feb. 15, 2017, in Mesa, Arizona, at the Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park. A special thanks to Lower Columbia Hospice for their assistance in Ernie’s final days.
