Joel Bernard Lucia was born in Portland, Oregon, to Ralph and Helen Lucia on Sept. 27, 1935. He was the oldest of four siblings, James Lucia, Katherine Thibert and William Lucia. Joel graduated from Columbia Preparatory School in 1953. He was accepted to the University of Oregon and was a fullback on the football team.

Joe was married to Marguerite O’Neil in 1955, and they had five children together, Margaret Lucia, Joel Lucia Jr., Thomas Lucia, Michael Lucia and Matthew Lucia.

Joel was later married to Diane Lucia and had two more children, Amy McClean and Mark Lucia.

In 1981, he met Jeanne Lucia, in Seaside, Oregon, and had three children, Stephen Lucia, Angela Babb and Scott Lucia.

He learned to hunt with his uncle, Walter Lucia, and passed on those adventures to his children. He enjoyed spending his time fishing and clamming with his family. Joe loved football, and was very involved in his children’s sports during their high school years.

Joe has worked many occupations over the years, however, he was a general contractor for residential construction in Seaside for over 30 years.

He prided himself on the abundance of grandchildren and great grandchildren he had, and how proud he was of them. Joe is survived by Margaret Lucia, Joel Lucia Jr., Matthew Lucia, Amy McClean, Mark Lucia, Stephen Lucia, Angela Babb and Scott Lucia. Also he is survived by 18 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Joe was preceded in death by his two sons, Thomas and Michael Lucia; his parents, Ralph and Helen Lucia; and his wife, Jeanne Lucia. He was a character in the community, and you could always recognize him because he wore a cowboy hat every day, and went to coffee regularly throughout town. He loved the Seaside community and his family. He will be dearly missed by all.
