This weekend, local Clatsop County resident Russell Mead competed in the “Hydro for Heros” in ABA Power Boat races held in Oak Harbor, Washington.
Hydros for Heroes is an American Power Boats Association (APBA) registered national and regional professional charity racing event promoted and hosted by The Craig McKenzie Team Foundation and supported by the Rotary Club of Oak Harbor. The event is meant to highlight the Heroes in our local community, such as the members of the military, law enforcement, firefighters, teachers and health care professionals. These Heroes help our community every day through their service and sacrifice.
Russell and his support team brought home first place honors in the Sport Ckass-C event.
Russell, who comes from a family of overachievers, has been designing, building and racing his own hydro planes for many years. In addition to placing first this weekend, Russell took second place at the Pateros, Washington event last weekend and so far is ranked 2nd in the nation for points in his Sport Class-C.
The photo of the 3 men, show Russell Mead in the center, with Wes Fidell (red shorts) placing 2nd and Mike White placing 3rd. Between these 3 racers they have the 3 fastest boats in the USA in their class.
Each year, in June the ABA holds races locally at the Cullaby lake in Warrenton. If you missed this year, put it on your calendar for next year. You can visit this link to read more about scheduled events for 2019.
